The beauty of bismuth’s vivid color is due to it’s natural rust. The colors are caused by a phenomenon called thin film interference. This oxide film layer is so thin that it breaks the light spectrum apart into colors.
To preserve the brilliance and vibrant color, it is recommended to refrain from touching it with bare hands often. Due to Bismuth’s crystal structure, the sculptures can be fragile and should be handled with care.
